NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission to decide by Thursday whether to extend nomination deadlines for urban local body polls in areas where candidates were allegedly prevented from filing nominations due to law and order issues. The court asked the poll panel to defer publication of the final candidates’ list until October 25 and examine complaints of violence and obstruction by tomorrow. If the commission decides to extend the deadline, candidates must get at least 48 hours from the publication of the decision to file nominations. The court also ordered police protection and CCTV coverage at nomination centres and sought a compliance report. The matter will be heard next on October 27.(With inputs from ANI)
